Sam Spare, a student at Carlisle High School (Cumberland Co.), was awarded a place in the
Normandy: Sacrifice for Freedom Albert H. Small Student & Teacher Institute sponsored by National History Day. Selected from over 109 student-teacher applications nationally, Spare had the opportunity to complete an in-depth study of the D-Day invasion. He participated in lectures and discussions with prestigious historians from George Washington University and the United States Military Academy at West Point. He also spent five days in Normandy, France, walking the footsteps of the soldiers. His culminating project was designing a website to honor William T. McCabe, a 1941 Carlisle High School graduate, who died in the D-Day invasion.
