- Alumni excels in astronomy, astrophysics after debilitating accident

In spite of a catastrophic injury to his cervical spinal cord in the winter of 1996 leaving him a quadriplegic, Jesse F. Leaman, Ph.D., East Stroudsburg High School Class of 1996, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in astronomy from the University of Maryland, a Master of Arts degree in astronomy from the University of California, Berkeley and a doctorate in astrophysics from the University of California, Berkeley. He has served as an intern and a graduate student researcher in astronomy and astrophysics projects at the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, and within the Astronomy Department at the University of California, Berkeley and has engaged in cutting-edge research into the evolution of galaxies and the cosmology of the universe. In his honor, a non-profit foundation has been established, dedicated to promoting the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and to developing adaptive technology for global access.
