Quakertown Community SD (Bucks Co.)
The National School Public Relations Association has awarded Quakertown Community SD a Golden Achievement Award for its contest entry called “Communicating the Change to Standards-Based Grading.”
The entry consisted of a notebook and a DVD full of all the ways district administrators and teachers have communicated the change to standards-based grading. The notebook included parent presentations, teacher training materials, student focus group information, district website information and more. The entry showed the numerous information pieces that people can read on the website. The entry showed a video (also available on the website) that shows four teachers in action demonstrating proficient and advanced lessons in their classrooms. The DVD also includes a video of students talking about the change to SBG.
The entry referenced the workshops now available at District Services Center for teachers and administrators from visiting school districts. QCSD has put SBG on the map in Pennsylvania. Its efforts to communicate the endeavor have now been recognized by a national, professional public relations organization.
As Kathy Metrick, assistant superintendent, said, “We maximized the use of all channels of communication in conveying the message of standards -based grading.”
The district will receive a certificate after the national NSPRA conference in San Antonio, TX. The district’s entry will be added to NSPRA’s resource files, available to members and other education leaders seeking exemplary public relations programs.
